The archaeological site of Ek Balam is located north of the city of Valladolid approximately 20 minutes by card and 40 minutes from the Chichen Itza airport.
Ek Balam is one of the most important and ancient Mayan archaeological sites in the state of Yucatan.
Ek Balam is a name that comes from an ancient Mayan ruler in Spanish means black jaguar.
It was discovered in the year 1886 by the anthropologist Desire Charnay but was until 1984 when works began investigating in coordination with the Americans anthropologists and INAH, the site was open to the public 10 years ago.
Ek Balam its a walled city and has greats buildings, it is believed that the main zone lived 700 people between the rulers and kings and the surrounding area close to 25,000 people.
