The Mayans brought to Mexico and humanity important scientific theories and transcendent cultural and social models, so it is worth taking a space to learn in the midst of the holiday. Chetumal has two important museums: the City Museum and the Museum of Mayan Culture. The first one is installed in the oldest colonial building in the city, which was founded Stayed government offices. It currently has six rooms that have photographs, weapons, furniture, clothes, vehicles and other objects characteristic of its local history. The theme of the Museum of Mayan Culture is Hispanic and exposes the culture, tools, knowledge and other legacy of the Mayan world.
The Museum of the Mayan Culture is divided into eight main sections, each detailing a particular subject. The first section is about the Mayans, their history and how they spread through Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. The second section is mainly about the Maya and their interaction with nature, including sea and mountain areas. The third section presents their cities and their architecture. Learn about urban development and its buildings. The fourth section is about the Maya and established trade around its entire atmosphere of influence. Also discover their economic activities, including fishing, hunting, farming and more. The fifth section of the museum is about the relationship between the Mayans and the world as they conceived it.
This explains in detail the underworld, the earthly and the heavenly. The next section is perhaps one of the most interesting, as it explains the sciences including the Maya developed their calendar, the solar system in general and astronomy, mathematics and writing system. The seventh section is about the relationship that the Maya developed with other populations around the world, as the Toltec and Teotihuacan. The last section explains the disappearance of the Maya, the interaction with the Spanish conquistadors, the Mayan priests prophecies made about these events and the end of their world.
The building now occupied by the Maya Culture Museum was owned by the Federal Electricity Commission dating back to 1940 and covers an area of 10,000 square meters, worked several years as an electricity generating plant that fed both the towns of Chetumal as HuayPix and Calderitas.
The permanent room is exclusively dedicated to the Mayan culture, has three levels that allow a journey through the world of pre-Columbian Maya Cosmopolitan, mortality, underworld and sky, circling always call Yaxche or ceiba tree representative and sacred Mayan. A great forest diagonally across the large room on three levels, with a setting based on real sounds of animals in the region, such as birds and howler monkeys. The standard tour lasts about an hour and a half with a guide. The Museum is located in downtown Chetumal, a few blocks from the Hotel Holiday Inn. Chetumal is on the border with Belize, and can be reached easily by bus from Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and Friday and Saturday from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm.
