Etymologically Yukalpeten means deer region: Yukal, meaning in Maya Peten deer and, among other things, area or region. It is known that the Yucatan Peninsula, is or was a certain rich fauna, among which figure the deer. The name of the famous passage of Antonio MedizBolio, Land of the Pheasant and the Deer, was created in allusion to the Yucatan.
Today has been the name of a port Yucalpeten shelter adjacent to the port of Progreso (Yucatan), located in the north of the peninsula, 37 km from the city of Merida (Yucatan), which favors the fishing industry local resources and provides for a rational management of the fishing fleet of Yucatán which is mainly concentrated in this puerto.Yucalpetén has a road that comunicates this port with Chelem and Chuburna, west, Merida and Progreso south east. It consists of two areas: Industrial and Tourism, the first fall fish processing plants, ice plants, shipyards and many companies related to fishing. The industrial area is located to the west and has concrete docks for ship operations.
The tourism sector is east , with direct communication with Progreso through the old road to Chelem; many ships operate in place for communication facilities to our port. It is equipped with concrete piers and south are yacht clubs, northern tourism industry is located the marina Yucaltepen with pleasure boats and villas for rest, due to the expansion of the city, on the west all horizontal streets in Yucalpeten are comunicated with several yacht clubs and nearby is the Marine Technology school and Special Education School.
